THOUGHTS MADE BALD

100 Things About Me
(More than you ever wanted to know...)

  1. I'm forty-something, which is fine with me.
  2. I'm pretty small, only 5'8".
  3. I weigh 152 pounds, but my (perhaps unrealistic) goal is 140.
  4. I have shaved my head for the past three years.
  5. If I didn't, I would have brown hair sprinkled with a bit of what I'll call silver.
  6. I change my facial hair frequently.
  7. Right now I have a full beard with moustache and sideburns, all closely trimmed.
  8. When I get tired of this look, I'm going to shave it all off and just grow a long goatee.
  9. I'm pretty hairy elsewhere, and even though I don't shave my body hair I do keep it trimmed.
  10. I don't have hairy palms, but by all rights I probably should.
  11. I like dressing well, but my definition of that often doesn't correspond to the fashion trends of the moment.
  12. I have lots more clothes than any sane person needs.
  13. I have a particularly hard time resisting buying shoes and bags.
  14. I live in the mid-Atlantic region of the U.S.
  15. If I had to move to another country, I would choose Canada, specifically Québec.
  16. I speak English and French.
  17. Je pourrais donc traduire cette liste en français, mais je ne vais pas le faire parce que je suis trop paresseux.
  18. At work, I have to use both languages.
  19. I rarely write about work online.
  20. In spite of that, most of the time I love my job.
  21. Because I'm a perfectionist, I used to be very self-conscious about giving presentations in French to an audience of native speakers; now it just puts me slightly on edge.
  22. I'm not an avid traveler, but I do enjoy traveling a little.
  23. However, outside of the United States, I've only been to Canada, France, Italy, England, and Switzerland.
  24. Within the U.S., I've only been to fifteen states and DC; in two of those states, Colorado and Ohio, I have only seen the inside of an airport.
  25. I'm an Apple fanatic.
  26. I have a G5 iMac and a G3 iBook.
  27. I recently yielded to the temptation to buy an iPod.
  28. I was afraid that I wouldn't use it very much, but as it turns out the opposite is true.
  29. In my free time I like to read blogs, write this one, and just fool around with my computer.
  30. When I find a new blog whose author I admire I tend to go back and read the whole thing from the beginning.
  31. Sometimes that takes a long, long time.
  32. At any given time, I usually have an adolescent crush on at least one other blogger.
  33. It occasionally strikes me that "Diaryland" is kind of a silly, juvenile name.
  34. Even so, I keep my blog here because it lets me do almost everything that I want easily and inexpensively.
  35. I love to read and I'm always in the middle of at least one book.
  36. My reading tastes are pretty eclectic, from detective novels to poetry to nonfiction.
  37. I don't have a favorite author, but I do have a number of favorite poets, who are listed here.
  38. I keep my own poetry anthology online and in text files on my iPod.
  39. I am a dictionary geek.
  40. In English my favorite is the American Heritage Dictionary; in French it's Le Petit Larousse Illustré.
  41. Of course I have the 2004 and 2005 editions, respectively, on my bookshelf.
  42. I like to cook.
  43. My favorite foods are seafood (crab, shrimp, and lobster, in that order), filet mignon, spaghetti, and chocolate.
  44. My favorite unhealthy fast food restaurant is Long John Silver's.
  45. I drink a lot more tea than coffee, although I like both.
  46. I quit both drinking and smoking some years back because both habits were having bad effects on my health.
  47. I have hypertension and acid reflux, both controlled by medication.
  48. I like my body.
  49. I am not at all self-conscious physically.
  50. In fact, I tend to be an exhibitionist.
  51. If you want to see proof of that, you can check out this gallery of my photos taken by Archerr, a fellow blogger and talented photographer. (The first link is not work-safe.)
  52. I hate going to the doctor but don't mind going to the dentist.
  53. When I am ill, I tend to research my symptoms online and convince myself that I have horrible diseases.
  54. Amazingly, over the past few years I've made a full recovery from several terminal illnesses.
  55. I love biking.
  56. I currently have three bikes, a road bike, a hybrid, and a retro cruiser.
  57. I really should sell the cruiser.
  58. I also run a little.
  59. I don't belong to a gym.
  60. However, I do a dumbbell routine at home a few times a week just to maintain tone and definition.
  61. Among my favorite TV shows are Fat Actress, Survivor, The Sopranos, Queer as Folk, Will and Grace, Kevin Hill, Trading Spaces, and Gilmore Girls.
  62. That list makes it pretty obvious that I'm a gay boy.
  63. I live with my best friend and housemate Rick.
  64. Rick and I used to be romantic partners but are not any longer.
  65. I only have two immediate family members.
  66. I love animals.
  67. I have a cat named Shadow and Rick has a cat named Ellie.
  68. Whose cat is whose is mainly important in determining who pays which vet bills.
  69. Ellie seems to like me better than she likes Rick; on the other hand, Shadow seems to like Rick better than me.
  70. At the moment, I don't have a boyfriend but I do have several f-buddies.
  71. I'm usually attracted to in-shape men in their thirties through fifties; there are always exceptions to every rule, though.
  72. I am versatile, depending on whom I'm with and the situation.
  73. I love to kiss.
  74. I've been told that I do it well, along with (ahem) a few other things, too.
  75. I have a 2-gauge Prince Albert.
  76. You can see it here. (This is another link that is not work-safe.)
  77. In the interests of equal exposure, here's another photo proving that sometimes I wear a jockstrap. (No, that one's not work-safe, either.)
  78. I like my PA quite a bit, even though I've never mastered the trick of urinating neatly while standing.
  79. I used to have both a nipple piercing and a guiche but took both out a few years ago.
  80. My next self-improvement project is going to be a tattoo, probably of a dragonfly.
  81. I'm not particularly inclined to follow an organized religion at this point in my life.
  82. The church that I feel most comfortable with is the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.
  83. I have a mild case of OCD which I've never had to seek formal treatment for.
  84. Luckily, I'm able to keep it under control using techniques I learned from an immensely helpful book called Brain Lock.
  85. These days the OCD usually just manifests itself in relatively innocuous ways.
  86. I like things around me to be neat and clean.
  87. I make my bed every morning.
  88. If my desk gets too messy I have to straighten it up before I can work comfortably.
  89. Even though I like a clean environment, I don't like the actual process of cleaning.
  90. I like routine, but I also like doing completely unexpected things every now and then to break out of it.
  91. I hate talking on the telephone.
  92. I have a cell phone but almost never use it.
  93. I have a B.A. and an M.S.
  94. That M.S. has been spectacularly useless.
  95. I keep running lists of my goals and aspirations.
  96. I make enough money to live comfortably but of course not as much as I'd like.
  97. I tend to be relatively frugal, but I'm not afraid to indulge myself from time to time.
  98. I like investing and I've been fairly successful at it.
  99. I am envious of people who put their full names and face photos on their blogs.
  100. Someday I am going to be one of them, but for now it's smarter for me to preserve at least a little anonymity.
